Magh Mela

A large number of pilgrims are likely to converge for ''Basant Panchami' falling on January 31 during the annual Magh Mela here to soak in the highly spiritual ambience and enjoy the colour, beauty and bizarre sights of the fair having a special attraction of its own.
The Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati rivers meet at Allahabad, which is famous as Prayag. It is this confluence that has made Prayag one of the holiest spots in Hinduism.
The month long (Jan-Feb) Magh Mela is a great momentous event where one can realise the essence of the country's great religious traditions. The event is held every year on the sandy bed of the river Ganga. However, 'Kumbh' and Ardh Kumbh' fairs are held after every twelve and six years. It also takes place in three other holy places -- Haridwar, Ujjain and Nasik. Stating the importance of the Mela, Acharya Shri Mahamandleshwar Swami Avdheshanand Giri told UNI that ''Rig Veda says bathing at Sangam gives immortality to humans. The Dharma Purana, Vishnu Purana, Varaha Purana and Mataya Purana also talk about the importance of Prayag. Bathing at Sangam washes away the sins of generations. The bathing ritual is equal to 1,000 Ashwamedha Yajnas (horse sacrifices).''
''Even Lord Ram, Sita and Lakshman had visited Sangam during their 14-year exile. Lord Ram had to take a dip in the Ganga to wash away His sin of killing a brahmin (Ravan). Perhaps, there are very few places parallel to Allahabad which are described with great reverence in ancient scriptures as Prayag - Prayagraj or Teertharaj, that is, the holiest pilgrimage centre. ''With the added attractions of Kumbh and Ardh Kumbh events, hailed as the worlds largest congregation of devotees, its glory has doubled,'' Baghambari Math Acharya Ananad Giri said.
He said it is believed the Lord Brahma, the creator, had chosen a part of land on earth, in which the Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati rivers flow into a confluence. Lord Brahma had referred to Allahabad as 'Teerthraj' of the 'King of all pilgramasges'.'' According to Hindu Mythology, Gods and the Demons once churned the oceans in search of the amrit (nectar) for immortality.
As soon as the pitcher containing nectar was retrieved, a struggle started between the two to wrest control of the same. During this, the pitcher of Amrit was kept at four different places-Prayag (Allahabad), Hardwar, Nasik and Ujjain making them sacred. Since then, Kumbh festival is celebrated at these four places making them hallowed and sacred.
Those who come here do not want to miss the 'darshan' of Akshaya Vat and Hanuman Temple, which houses an idol of the Lod in a reclining posture, a few feet below the ground. It is said that every year, the Ganga overflows until it touches the sleeping Lord's feet and then starts receding.
Biting cold and spine-chilling winds, which force an ordinary mortal to remain indoors, pose no problem for the half naked 'sadhus', 'kalpvasis' and scantily dressed devouts to throng here for 'spiritual cleansing'.
Living on the beaches of the Ganga and conducting traditional rites for the entire festival, known as 'Kalpvasa' holds a special religious significance. Thus who would like to miss this hallowed and rare occasion where admist the atmosphere reverberating with vedic hymns, mantras, chiming bells, incense and flower fragrance in 'the city of tents' a 'spiritual dip' in Sangam would be an everlasting experience.
The most important bathing days are 'Makar Sankranti', which marks the begining of the Mela, 'Paush Poornima', 'Mauni Amavasya', 'Basant Panchami', 'Magh Poornima' and 'Mahashivratri, marking the end of the month long Mela.
